Most people don't really know how to do it. Here is help:
Do's:
| 1. |
DO Use a clear layout; easy to read and understand; friendly to the eye. |
| |
| 2. |
DO keep your resume in one page. If your experience could fill more than a page, prioritize your experience. |

| |
| 4. |
DO quantify whenever possible. Use numbers to tell employers how many people you supervised, by what percentage you increased sales, how many products you represented, etc. |
Directed the activities of 5 regional financial organizations … in Asia Pacific
Managed a team of 10 financial analysts …
Exceeded 1999 annual revenue and profit objectives by $140m (21%)
and $30m (23%) respectively.
| 5. |
DO include as much contact information as possible - any information that would enable an employer to reach you during business hours. |
| |
| 6. |
DO avoid overuse of the same words. |
| |
| 7. |
DO emphasize transferable skills (e.g. project management, financial analysis skills, etc), especially if you do not have much experience or seek to change careers. |
| |
| 8. |
DO list your experience and education in reverse chronological order. |
Don'ts:
| 1. |
DON'T overuse expressions like 'Duties included', 'Responsibilities included', or 'Responsible for'. That is job-description language, not accomplishments-oriented resume language that sells. |
Responsible for developing new accounts and managing projects …
Developed new accounts and managed projects …
| 2. |
DON'T emphasize skills and job activities you do not want to pursue in the future, even if they represent great strengths for you. In fact, you may not even want to mention these activities. Why describe how great your clerical skills are if you do not want to do clerical work in the future? |
| |
| 3. |
DON'T use personal pronouns (I, my, me) in a resume. Preferably, use action verbs consistently when describing your jobs. |
I improved the inter-office communication system.
Improved the inter-office communication system.
| 4. |
DON'T leave out the locations of your past jobs (City). This information is expected, but many jobseekers unwittingly omit it. |
| |
| 5. |
DON'T include irrelevant information and qualifications, such your height, weight, place of birth, marital status, sex, ethnicity/race, reasons for leaving previous job(s), names of former supervisors, specific street addresses or phone numbers of former employers, picture of yourself, salary information, the title 'Resume', or any information that could be perceived as controversial, like religion, church affiliations, or political affiliations. |
| |
| 6. |
DON'T list high school, and irrelevant qualifications such as driver's licence, tour guide, scuba diving, etc. |
